“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2

This week we’ve explored what it means to live with each other—spouses, children, coworkers, neighbors. Paul’s practical instructions in Colossians aren’t just ancient household codes; they’re a blueprint for Christian community that starts at home.

Ellen White wrote, “Each member of the family has a work to do… The cultivation of love, sympathy, and courtesy is never out of season… Small acts of attention, little deeds of love and self-sacrifice, will make the pathway of life bright” (The Adventist Home, p. 179-180).

Notice she doesn’t say grand gestures. She says small acts. Little things. The coffee made without being asked. The listening ear after a long day. The gentle word instead of the sharp one we’re tempted to speak. These are the threads that weave a home into something that reflects heaven.

Too often we think heaven is about streets of gold and gates of pearl—and it is. But it’s also about a place where love reigns, where kindness is the default, where each person seeks the good of the other. That can start now. In your home. Today.

Paul’s instructions this week weren’t about creating a hierarchy; they were about creating harmony. Husbands loving sacrificially. Wives partnering in faith. Parents training without discouraging. Children honoring joyfully. Workers serving as unto the Lord. All of it held together by prayer and gracious speech.

The world is watching. They see how we treat each other when the door closes. They hear how we speak when we think no one’s listening. Our homes are either a witness to the transforming power of the gospel or a contradiction of it.

Ellen White continues: “All should regard it as their special duty to make the family circle cheerful and pleasant… The happiness of life’s journey depends largely upon the companions with whom we associate” (Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 539).

What if we took that seriously? What if each family member saw it as their special duty to make home cheerful? Not the responsibility of one person, but the shared work of all.

Reflect: What is one small act of love you can do today to make your home a little more like heaven? What burden can you help carry? What word of kindness can you speak?

Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Heaven starts in the small things.
